How do I find a local obituary? ›

Many funeral homes publish obituaries on their websites. These can usually be located with a Google search on the person's name. Local genealogical and historical societies, public libraries, and some newspaper publishers maintain clipping files of obituaries.

At the State Office, death records are available from January 1919 to the present for deaths that occurred in the State of Georgia. Some counties may have older death records in their files. Those county vital records offices may be contacted directly.

However, many of the county libraries in South Carolina have special indexes for obituaries from local newspapers and may have the newspapers on microfilm. The two major obituary resources are the Denver Obituary Project from the Denver Public Library and the Colorado Obituary Project from the Colorado Genealogical Society.

FamilySearch Record Search Collection

Death certificates are open to the public. You must be a member of the immediate family or legal representative to acquire a certified copy of a death certificate with the cause of death. Death certificates with cause of death are issued to the public on non-certified white paper.

Death certificates become public records after 50 years. Then any person may obtain an uncertified copy of the death certificate, upon submission of application form and fees.

In 2022, the South Carolina General Assembly passed S.C. H3325 which requires funeral homes and medical certifiers to complete, certify and file death certificates electronically.

Can you look up death certificates in Ohio? ›

Our phone number for public inquiries is 614-466-2531. The Bureau of Vital Statistics maintains birth records from December 20, 1908 and death records from 1971 to present. Fetal death records, heirloom birth certificates, and stillbirth certificates can also be ordered.

Vital records, including birth, death, adoption, marriage, and divorce, are confidential per Colorado state statute (C.R.S. 25-2-117). As a result, Colorado vital records are not public records and therefore not searchable online. Vital records can only be released to those who are eligible.

Two state-level California Death Indexes can be found at Ancestry.com (a database anyone can access from any library branch and Central Library) or FamilySearch.org (a free internet database).

Obituaries in Massachusetts and other parts of New England can generally be found in the local town or county papers. Many obituaries for Boston and the surrounding area can be found in: Boston Athenaeum.

Some funeral directors list recent and upcoming funerals (for example, Co-operative Funeralcare). If you know where the deceased lived and died, you can also contact local funeral homes for information. Otherwise, you may be able to find details of a funeral online at sites such as: Funeral Notices.
