Vectors of identity development during the first year: black first-generation students’ reflections

Chickering and Reisser’s [1993. Education and Identity. 2nd ed. San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass] seven-vector identity development theory served as overarching framework. The focus group discussions and individual interviews of ten black first-generation students were analysed thematically. Participants experienced their first year as a time of instability, mostly due to inadequate preparation for the psychological, social, and especially academic challenges of higher education. Black first-generation students’ ability to remain connected to their family while forming new social connections on campus enabled them to feel safe in their exploration of new worldviews, relationships, and occupational considerations. Black first-generation students’ unique progression in vector attainment confirms the importance of research on the application of Chickering’s theory in a more diverse higher education environment.

On Becoming an Emerging Adult Parent in South Africa: Processes of Commitment, Exploration and Reconsideration of a Parental Identity

Twenty-four South-African emerging adult parents were interviewed. Thematic analysis revealed that the intersection of the transitions towards parenthood and adulthood culminates in a nuanced expression of parental roles in relation to the themes of possibility, instability, in-betweenness, self-focus and identity exploration. Heterogeneity was seen in the expression of mixed emotions of hope and excitement about parenthood together with insecurity and struggles in the attempt to balance multiple roles, especially when facing challenges related to the South-African context. Participants prioritised responsibility and commitment to the parental role, facilitated by the support from parents, extended families and cultural norms. This research presents first steps towards a qualitative inquiry into the three-dimensional conceptualisation of parental identity formation.

School as a “stage of life”: approaches to diversity among teachers in racially-integrated schools

Educational studies, Mar 12, 2020

ABSTRACT This study explored approaches to diversity among teachers in racially-integrated school... more ABSTRACT This study explored approaches to diversity among teachers in racially-integrated school environments in the unique South African climate of transformation. Twelve teachers from urban, public, racially-integrated high schools participated part in two focus group discussions which were thematically analysed. Teachers articulated their understanding of diversity as the interplay between difference and sameness, but were inclined to prioritise sameness. Most teachers valued the established ethos and identity of the school, but reiterated the value and importance of embracing diversity in an integrated environment. A high priority was placed on the role that a multicultural school environment play in preparing learners to become valuable members of a global and multicultural society. To bring the commitment towards racial integration to fruition and to truly utilise diversity as an asset, teachers should be supported and equipped with the competence to manage the nuances, complexities, and contradictions in approaching and valuing the notion of diversity.

Experiences of flourishing and languishing during the first year at university

Aim: The aim of this study was to explore students experiences of flourishing and languishing during their first year at university. Methods: A nominal group technique was utilised in order to obtain data regarding the experiences of 22 first-year students and was thereafter analysed by means of thematic analysis. Results: Various dimensions of emotional, psychological and social well-being were highlighted as essential in experiencing either flourishing or languishing during students first year at university. Although students experienced both flourishing and languishing, it is evident that students are more vulnerable to languishing during the beginning of their university career. Facing the big unknown, being confronted with practical difficulties, finding academics overwhelming, experiencing social isolation and being a victim of crime were prominent. Students however, learn to flourish when they achieve academic mastery, experience personal growth and independence and secure a social support system. Conclusions: The first year is seen as fundamental to student success at university, therefore the promotion of mental health during this year can be valuable in ensuring flourishing experiences during students’ academic journey.
