Interview with Angel Alvarado (Rubik’s Cube Juggler) (2024)

Angel achieved world recognition after breaking the world record for solving three Rubik’s cubes while juggling. The challenge is one of the most difficult there is, so much so that few people have done it, among them, only two have been able to do it under five minutes. It’s incredible!

“It’s not a gift,” Angel says, “it’s just discipline and training.” He adds: “This is particularly difficult to control as my focus is on solving the cubes and not so much on juggling as such, so I require a very high level of precision on every throw for this.”

Angel David Alvarado is 19 years old. He was born on September 26, 2002, in Bogota, Colombia. Currently, he studies pure biology at the Universidad de la Salle. Aside from his studies, he is training to break other world records.

Esteban Velez: Tell us about your childhood. What is the event from your past that you remember the most?

Ángel Alvarado: The past event that I remember most from my childhood was the first time I visited another country. It was in 2014 and it was a 2-week trip where I got to know Argentina and Chile. I did a lot of things that I had never done before and I learned.

E.V.: How and when did you start juggling?

A.A: I started (juggling) because I set myself the goal of achieving that skill of solving 3 Rubik’s cubes by juggling in an uninterrupted cascade. But to begin with, I needed to learn to juggle. So, in early 2020 I started practicing and it took about a week to get me to hold the cascade for more than 30 seconds. From then on, I kept practicing until I reached 4 minutes.

My only goal was to solve Rubik’s cubes by juggling. For a year, I never tried to learn any different tricks, until in 2021 that I started to learn some tricks. Now, in 2022, I am much more focused on juggling, and I would like to improve much more.

E.V.: Tell us what the process was like to make the world record for juggling three Rubik’s cubes.

A.A.: In terms of practice, it took me 2 years to break the record: from when I started solving Rubik’s cubes in 2019 to 2022 where I managed to break the record for the first time. First, I started practicing until I got over the 20-second barrier; then, I started practicing solving it with one hand until I managed to do it in less than 30 seconds; and in 2020, I started juggling so that I can combine the skills.

It took me 5 months to solve just one Rubik’s cube that way for the first time. Once I got it, I focused on lowering my times until in November of that same year I managed to make 3 cubes for the first time. I kept practicing and realized that I could break the record with a little more practice. So, I decided to keep practicing, and in May 2021 I made the first attempt where I managed to break the record officially for the first time. After that the bureaucratic process (which was too long, until March 2022) the record was finally approved. Once the record was approved, Guinness contacted me to carry out another record attempt as they wanted to record it with much better quality and, thanks to that, in April, I managed to break the record again.

E.V.: Did you know Eduard García, creator of EduRubik? (EduRubik helped make arrangements for the world record)

A.A.: Yes, I knew Eduard since he is the best-known seller of Rubik’s cubes in Colombia, and he is the one in charge of organizing and carrying out all the Speedcubing competitions in Colombia. He was always a very cooperative person with everything and someone quite kind. He is the one who currently helps me with all the events and interviews I have done so far.

E.V.: What was the hardest thing to learn in that world record?

A.A.: Perhaps the most difficult thing to learn was the trick itself, since to only be able to do it once and with a single cube for the first time it took me 5 months. And not just any type of practice, but a very intensive practice of more than 5 hours a day without stopping (4 hours of Speedcubing and one hour of juggling). Mainly due to the fact that I had just started to learn juggling and this trick is much more demanding in terms of juggling than Speedcubing due to the consistency that must be had and the precision of the throws. Perhaps, if I had had a little more experience with juggling, I would have achieved it faster, but I’m sure it would still have taken me several months to achieve it.

E.V.: I could tell that you, and Que Jianyu, rotate the rows and columns of the cube with one hand, while the other hand grabs and throws. Within the select group of people who do that feat, is there someone who moves the rows and columns with both hands?

A.A.: Yes, of the 14 people in the world who can do this, two use both hands to turn the cube. Although this may seem better in their case: they use it as a support to be able to perform certain movements more comfortably and not to optimize speed, since they are not as fast solving the cube with one hand, so they rely on make movements with both hands to be able to perform the trick, since otherwise they would not be able to perform certain movements with one hand that require considerably more speed.

I can perform movements with my two hands, the problem is that doing it with my non-dominant hand implies greater difficulty and therefore I am much less consistent, although it is in my plans to practice being able to do it with both hands consistently since if mastered, I could lower my times twice as easily and without the need to do so many movements per grip with one hand.

E.V.: How was your family’s reaction when you got the Guinness World Records title?

A.A.: It was a positive reaction in general, mainly from my mother, who was the person who supported me the most with all this.

E.V.: Do you hold the world record for solving a Rubik’s cube on a unicycle?

A.A.: That is not a world record. The video where I appear solving a Rubik’s cube on a unicycle was simply one of the many tricks, we recorded the day I broke the record for the second time. Eduard uploaded it to his channel and many people thought it was another world record, but it really isn’t.

E.V.: How many hours a day do you train Rubik cube?

A.A.: 4 hours every day and usually in different categories. Previously, I only practiced (Rubik’s cube) 3×3 one handed and 3×3 blindfolded, but now I like to practice all categories of official competitions, such as Megaminx Rubik’s Clock, Square 1, etc…

E.V.: Do you know how to juggle with balls, clubs, or rings?

A.A.: I can juggle 4 balls. I don’t have clubs or rings, but once I learn how to juggle 5 balls, I will start learning other types of juggling like Cigar box clubs and contact juggling. Currently, I put a little more aside solving Rubik’s cubes by juggling as after the record I was quite satisfied and now I am much more fully involved in improving my juggling skills as much as possible.

E.V.: In addition to the Rubik’s cube, what sports do you practice?

A.A.: I juggle for an hour a day every day and I also freestyle on a unicycle for an hour a day. Since I learned to ride a unicycle, the world of freestyle has caught my attention and I am surprised that there is so little community about it in Colombia. I would like to make this sport much more known as it is very fun and interesting.

E.V.: How do you see yourself in 5 years?

A.A.: I don’t really know, I don’t like to think about the future, I just let things happen. 5 years ago, I didn’t even know how to solve a Rubik’s cube or juggle, I saw all of this as things that only people with special abilities could do. My life, and me as a person, has changed a lot in this short time and I hope that in 5 years’ time things will continue to improve and I can continue learning and progressing in everything I set out to do.

I’m someone who’s passionate about absolutely everything, so it wouldn’t surprise me if I ended up spending my time on something radically different than what I’m currently doing a few years from now. I’m really not sure what will happen with my life, not even a year from now I could be able to visualize myself due to how changeable I am, only time will end up determining it, I guess.

E.V.: Do you have in mind to break or create other world records?

A.A.: Yes, I am currently trying to be the first person to solve 3 Rubik’s cubes by juggling on a unicycle, and I would also like to one day be able to solve 4 Rubik’s cubes by juggling the 4-ball fountain pattern.

E.V.: What advice would you give to people who feel inspired by you?

A.A.: Don’t give up and get it out of your head that people are born with extraordinary abilities out of nowhere. I believe that natural talent is much more a myth than a reality; what really determines whether they are capable of achieving something is the time and effort they invest in achieving that goal. Always try to get out of your comfort zone and try everything. Don’t let yourself be influenced by the opinions of others either, since in the long run the vast majority of people only care about what you do until they see you succeeding in it.

Ángel logró el reconocimiento en el mundo tras romper el récord mundial de resolver tres cubos Rubik mientras se hace malabares con ellos. El desafío es uno de los más difíciles que hay, tanto así, que pocas personas lo han hecho, entre ellas, solo dos han podido realizarlo por debajo de los cinco minutos. ¡Es increíble!

No es un don, dice Ángel, es solo disciplina y entrenamiento. Y agrega: “Esto es particularmente difícil de controlar ya que mi concentración está enfocada en la resolución de los cubos y no tanto en los malabares como tal, así que requiero de un nivel de precisión muy alto en cada lanzamiento para esto”.

Ángel David Alvarado tiene 19 años. Nació el 26 de septiembre de 2002 en Bogota, Colombia. Actualmente, estudia biología pura en la Universidad de la Salle. Aparte de sus estudios, entrena para romper otros récords mundiales.

Esteban Velez: Háblanos de tu niñez. ¿Cuál es el evento de tu pasado que más recuerdas?

Ángel Alvarado: El evento pasado que más recuerdo de mi infancia fue la primera vez que visité otro país. Fue en 2014 y fue un viaje de 2 semanas donde conocí Argentina y Chile. Hice muchas cosas que no había hecho nunca antes y aprendí bastante.

E.V.: ¿Cómo y cuándo empezaste a hacer malabares?

A.A.: Empecé (a hacer malabares) ya que me propuse la meta de conseguir lograr aquella habilidad de resolver 3 cubos de Rubik haciendo malabares en una cascada ininterrumpida. Pero, para empezar, necesitaba aprender a hacer malabares. Entonces, a inicios de 2020, comencé a practicar y me tomó alrededor de una semana conseguir mantener la cascada por más de 30 segundos. De ahí en adelante seguí practicando hasta la alcanzar los 4 minutos.

Mi único objetivo era resolver cubos de rubik haciendo malabares. Durante un año, nunca intenté aprender ningún truco diferente, hasta en 2021 que comencé a aprender algunos trucos. Ahora, en 2022, estoy mucho más enfocado en el tema de los malabares y me gustaría mejorar mucho más.

E.V. Dinos cómo fue el proceso para hacer el récord mundial de malabares con tres cubos Rubik.

A.A.: En cuestión de práctica, me tomó 2 años lograr romper el récord: desde que inicié a resolver cubos de Rubik en 2019 hasta 2022 donde logré romper el récord por primera vez. Primero, inicié practicando hasta llegar a superar la barrera de los 20 segundos; luego, comencé a practicar para resolverlo con una mano hasta lograr hacerlo en menos de 30 segundos; y en 2020, comencé con los malabares para, de esa forma, poder combinar las habilidades.

Me tomó 5 meses resolver solo un cubo de Rubik de esa forma por primera vez. Una vez lo conseguí, me enfoqué en bajar mis tiempos hasta que en noviembre de ese mismo año conseguí hacer 3 cubos por primera vez. Seguí practicando y me di cuenta de que podría romper el récord con un poco más de práctica. Entonces, decidí seguir practicando, y en mayo de 2021 realicé el primer intento donde logré romper el récord de manera oficial por primera vez. Luego de eso el proceso burocrático (que fue demasiado largo, hasta marzo de 2022) el récord fue finalmente aprobado. Una vez fue aprobado el récord, Guinness me contactó para llevar a cabo otro intento de récord ya que querían grabarlo con mucha mejor calidad y, gracias a eso, en abril, logré romper el récord nuevamente.

E.V.: ¿Conocías a Eduard García, creador de EduRubik? (EduRubik ayudó a hacer las gestiones para el récord mundial)

A.A.: Sí, a Eduard lo conocía ya que él es el vendedor más conocido de cubos Rubik en Colombia y es quien se encarga de organizar y llevar a cabo todas las competencias de Speedcubing en Colombia. Siempre fue una persona muy colaboradora con todo y alguien bastante amable. Él es quien actualmente me ayuda con todos los eventos y entrevistas que he realizado hasta ahora.

E.V.: ¿Qué fue lo más difícil de aprender en ese récord mundial?

A.A.: Lo más difícil de aprender quizás fue el truco como tal, ya que para solo poder realizarlo una sola vez y con un solo cubo por primera vez me tomó 5 meses. Y no cualquier tipo de practica si no una práctica muy intensiva de más de 5 horas diarias sin parar (4 horas de Speedcubing y 1 hora de malabares). Principalmente, por el hecho de que recién acababa de empezar a aprender malabares y este truco es mucho más demandante en cuestión de malabares que en Speedcubing debido a la consistencia que se debe tener y la precisión de los lanzamientos. Quizás, si hubiera tenido un poco más de experiencia con los malabares, lo hubiera logrado más rápido, pero estoy seguro de que igual me hubiera tomado bastantes meses en conseguirlo.

E.V.: Pude notar que tú, y Que Jianyu, giran las filas y columnas del cubo con una mano, mientras que la otra mano agarra y lanza. Dentro del selecto grupo de personas que hacen esa hazaña, ¿hay alguien que mueva las filas y columnas con las dos manos?

A.A.: Sí, de las 14 personas en el mundo que podemos hacer esto, dos usan ambas manos para girar el cubo. Aunque esto puede parecer mejor en el caso de ellos: lo emplean como un soporte para poder realizar ciertos movimientos más cómodamente y no para optimizar la velocidad, ya que ellos no son tan rápidos resolviendo el cubo con una sola mano por lo que se apoyan en hacer movimientos con las dos manos para poder realizar el truco, ya que de lo contrario no podrían realizar ciertos movimientos con una sola mano que requieren de bastante más velocidad.

Yo puedo realizar movimientos con mis 2 manos, el problema es que hacerlo con mi mano no dominante implica una mayor dificultad y por lo tanto soy mucho menos consistente, aunque está en mis planes practicar para poder hacerlo con ambas manos de manera consistente ya que si logro dominar podría bajar mis tiempos el doble fácilmente y sin la necesidad de hacer tantos movimientos por agarre con una mano.

E.V. ¿Cómo fue la reacción de tu familia cuando obtuviste el título Guinness récords?

A.A.: Fue una reacción positiva en general, principalmente por parte de mi madre que fue la persona quien más me apoyo con todo esto.

E.V.: ¿Tienes el récord mundial de resolver un cubo Rubik encima de un monociclo?

A.A.: Ese no es un récord mundial. El video donde aparezco resolviendo un cubo de Rubik en un monociclo simplemente fue un truco de los muchos que grabamos el día que rompí el récord por segunda vez. Eduard lo subió a su canal y muchas personas pensaron que se trataba de otro récord mundial, pero realmente no lo es.

E.V.: ¿Cuántas horas entrenas al día cubo Rubik?

A.A.: 4 horas todos los días y, generalmente, en diferentes categorías. Anteriormente, solo practicaba (cubo rubik) 3×3 a una mano y 3×3 a ciegas, pero actualmente me gusta practicar todas las categorías de las competencias oficiales, como por ejemplo Megaminx Rubiks Clock, Square 1, etc…

E.V.: ¿Sabes hacer malabares con pelotas, clavas o aros?

A.A.: Puedo hacer malabares con 4 pelotas. No tengo clavas ni aros, pero una vez aprenda a hacer malabares con 5 pelotas comenzaré a aprender otros tipos de malabarismo como clavas Cigar box y malabares de contacto. Actualmente, dejé un poco más de lado resolver cubos de Rubik haciendo malabares ya que después del récord quedé bastante satisfecho y ahora estoy metido mucho más de lleno en mejorar mis habilidades como malabarista lo máximo posible.

E.V.: Además del cubo Rubik, ¿qué deportes practicas?

A.A.: Practico malabares una hora diaria todos los días y también practico freestyle en monociclo una hora diaria. Desde que aprendí a montar monociclo, me ha llamado mucho la atención el mundo del freestyle y me sorprende que haya tan poca comunidad al respecto en Colombia. Me gustaría conseguir dar a conocer mucho más este deporte ya que es muy divertido e interesante.

E.V.: ¿Cómo te ves en 5 años?

A.A.: No lo sé realmente, no me gusta pensar en el futuro solo dejo que las cosas sucedan. Hace 5 años ni siquiera sabía resolver un cubo de Rubik o hacer malabares, todo esto lo veía como cosas que solo personas con capacidades especiales podían realizar. Mi vida, y yo como persona, ha cambiado bastante en este poco tiempo y espero que de aquí a 5 años las cosas sigan mejorando y pueda continuar aprendiendo y progresando en todo lo que me proponga.

Soy alguien apasionado por absolutamente todo por lo que no me sorprendería que terminara dedicando mi tiempo a algo rotundamente diferente a lo que hago actualmente de aquí a unos cuantos años. Realmente no estoy nada seguro de lo que suceda con mi vida ni siquiera de aquí a un año podría ser capaz de visualizarme debido a lo cambiante que soy, solo el tiempo lo terminara determinando, supongo.

E.V.: ¿Tienes en mente romper o crear otros récords mundiales?

A.A.: Sí, actualmente estoy intentando ser la primera persona en conseguir resolver 3 cubos de Rubik haciendo malabares en un monociclo, y también me gustaría algún día poder resolver 4 cubos de Rubik haciendo malabares en el patrón de la fuente de 4 pelotas.

E.V.:¿Qué consejos darías a las personas que se sienten inspirados por ti?

A.A.: No se rindan y quítense de la cabeza que las personas nacen con habilidades extraordinarias de la nada. Considero que el talento natural es mucho más un mito que una realidad, lo que realmente determina si son capaces o no de lograr algo es el tiempo y esfuerzo que invierten en conseguir dicha meta. Siempre intenten salir de su zona de confort e intenten todo, tampoco se dejen influenciar mucho de las opiniones ajenas ya que a la larga la gran mayoría de personas solo les importa lo que haces hasta que te ven triunfando en ello.
